In his pursuit to become a musician, Barry Morgenstein discovered a career path that created a better living for him while allowing him to keep close to his music roots – that career was photography. Since he “put down the guitar and picked up a camera” Barry has been unstoppable – photographing musicians and celebrities like Michael Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meryl Streep and Paul McCartney. Barry tells us about his journey to becoming a true rock star in his photography career.

When did you discover your passion for photography?

When I was a teenager into my early 20s, I was a musician. I played guitar in a band. I loved music, but realized I did not have the talent to become a professional musician. I started taking photos of my friends that were musicians and realized through my love of music, I had a talent as a photographer and was able to capture musicians.

I put down the guitar and picked up a camera.

What made you decide that this is what you wanted to do full-time for a living?

I decided almost immediately after I picked up my camera and realized I had a talent.

What do you love about your job?

What I love the most about my job is the amazing variety of people I get to meet and photograph. From actors, to musicians, to TV news anchors, and especially heroes like Veterans, members of the Military and law enforcement.

What’s been one of the proudest or most memorable moments in your career so far?

The proudest was receiving an award from NJBlueNow magazine (A magazine for law enforcement) for Excellence in Photography and receiving the award in front of hundreds of Police officers. The most memorable was spending four days in South Carolina volunteering for The Independence Fund and Gary Sinese Foundation, doing headshots for caregivers and wounded warriors.

If you could go back to the early days of your career, what advice would you give yourself?

Best advice I would give myself or any photographer is to know when you take good advice and know when to ignore bad advice.

Do you have a particular style of photography?

My favorite style is my signature look. Classic grey background. Simple classic portrait.

Who are some of your favorite photographers that you look to for inspiration? Just starting out in your career or still today?

I started out admiring Rock and Roll portrait photographers like Bob Gruen, Linda McCartney, David Baily, Ethan Russell etc. Then great portrait photographers like Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Scavullo, Bruce Weber,

If you sense nerves, what do you do to make your subject feel more comfortable in front of the camera?

My reputation is as a very laid back friendly, normally guy. I just talk to my clients. We always play music at my shoots. The whole atmosphere at the studio is very friendly and relaxed.

What’s your favorite camera to shoot with?

Canon 70D

What is one tip you’d give someone who’s just starting out their career as a Photographer?

Work as an assistant and just keep shooting until you discover your own style.
