Superr Hair Stylist Ami Chibana

Having been curious about art, fashion and beauty since childhood, Ami Chibana was set on pursuing a career that would allow her to explore these creative industries. Now as a reputable Hair Stylist, Ami can express her artistic side by creating new hair styles for her wide array of clients. Ami tells us about her path to success from when she started in Tokyo to where she’s now living her dream in NYC.

How long have you been working as a professional Hair Stylist?

I have been working as a hairstylist for twelve years.

When did you decide that this is what you want to do full-time, for a living? How did you come to that decision?

I decided to be a hairstylist when I was seventeen. I always loved to create art I got many awards as a child and that gave me motivation to express myself. I was also curious about the fashion and beauty culture when I was teenager. I decided to work abroad as a hairstylist at the same time. I was born and raised in Tokyo which is an original and unique culture, but all the fashion style, music, movies from foreign countries and big cities would always appeal to me and inspire me.

What do you love about being a Hair Stylist?

That’s  a hard question, because there are many things I love about it. First of all, I love working with people. Especially working in New York makes my job very exciting and inspiring everyday, because all my clients I met here are from all over the world. And they all have different jobs or have different dreams. Sharing different cultures through my work is great education for my life. I can also express my work in places like magazines, fashion shows, and weddings.
Second of all, making people beautiful simply makes them happy, and it makes me happy as well. I feel like we are not just cutting hair or styling hair. We are working on more deeper side of people’s mind. I always believe  that making people beautiful brings peacefulness to their mind. At last, there is always something new to learn. I never get bored  being a hairstylist.

What’s been one of the most memorable or proudest moments in your career so far?

I worked on the interactive music video of Bob Dylan, which was a new idea of a music video. I was honored to work with all the amazing young professionals. And this music video got so many awards.
It was amazing to join a team that created a new challenging project. And the video inspired many people, which is my goal all the time.

What’s the toughest part about being a hair stylist?

I’ve never felt that being a hair stylist is tough.

What is your ultimate professional dream?

My final goal is to make my own hair products brand. I would love to use the money to bring beauty education, and products to underserved people around the world. I really believe that bringing beauty, or a sense of beauty, to people makes their life more peaceful.

Do you have a signature haircut that you’re known for or do you have a favorite haircut that you like to give?

I love all types of haircuts, but recently I like a texture bob. I think the most important part of a haircut is that it fits their body and face.

If you could bring only one beauty item with you on a trip, what would it be?

UV cream.

Do you have a favorite motto or mantra you live by?

Your vision becomes your future.

What is one tip you’d give someone who’s just starting out their career as a Hair Stylist?

Just watch every moment of how other stylists work. You can learn from everybody on the floor every single moment. Watch and steal!
