Taking the risky, unconventional path in life has proven to be the best decision that Professional Makeup Artist, Abby Lauren had ever made. With her heart already set on pursuing this career, all it took was a little support and encouragement from her grandmother to hit the ground running. Since then she’s built up an impressive client base and enjoys the instant gratification that her subjects feel when her work is complete. Abby lets us in on her journey to success in the beauty industry.
How long have you been a Makeup Artist?
I’ve been a Makeup Artist for 12 years
What sparked your interest doing makeup?
My grandmother was a sculptor, who was really into makeup. She introduced me to makeup when I was about 2 and I was hooked from then on!
What inspired you to pursue being a Makeup Artist full-time?
My grandmother inspired me. When I wanted to drop out of college, my grandmother actually encouraged me to drop out and to go to makeup school. She got on the phone with my father (A doctor) and told him “she’s an artist like me, she needs to go to makeup school! I will pay for it!” My parents have always been “education first” type of people and it was tough for them at first to just go along with me dropping out of college but we now all agree that it was the best decision I could have made!
Thanks to grandma Tina!
What is one of the proudest moments in your career so far?
I feel like I’m constantly proud. At this point in my career I do primarily bridal makeup, which I love! I love seeing the bride’s face when they see their makeup finished and being a part of such a big day. I love working with clients who never wear makeup that are so terrified of it and seeing their faces when their makeup is finished, seeing that look of happiness. Most people just want to look like a “better version” of themselves and I love helping to create that! That truly makes me proud.
What do you love about being a makeup artist?
I’m a totally makeup junkie so having an excuse to buy it for my kit and play with makeup while getting paid for it? It’s my childhood dream!!! I also love helping people feel good about themselves. Makeup is AMAZING for that! It’s like you have a day where you wake up and you’re like “oh my god, i look like crap”, once you throw on some makeup, it’s an instant confidence booster! I love being able to help boost client’s confidence.
Where do you see your career going?
I will continue to do bridal and event makeup, It’s my favorite!
How do you currently market yourself and get jobs?
Word of mouth is probably my biggest “marketing technique”, especially when it comes to bridal. Connecting with others in the industry is also another great way to get referrals.
What’s one tip you’d give someone who’s just starting out as a Makeup Artist or in the beauty industry?
RUNNNNNN!!!! hahaha no I’m just kidding. Be prepared to work your way up, it takes years to develop your own business. Assist amazing artists, ask lots of questions, be respectful and polite and know your place.
If you’re assisting another artist or someone has brought you on a job, don’t give out your business card as it’s their client. Just take in as much knowledge as you can, even when you think you know everything, there’s always more to learn. After doing this for over 10 years I’m still always learning!
