Whether we’re preparing to go in front of the cameras, attending a special event or just stepping out for a cup of coffee, it’s important that we look our very best. No one knows this better than Superr Makeup Artist, Vincenza Carovillano. With 30 years under her belt, she’s dedicated most of her life to making sure her clients put their best face forward. Equipped with her makeup brushes and beautifully sassy attitude, Vincenza took the time to tell us a little more about how she built her passion into a career.
How long have you been a Makeup Artist?
I have been a Makeup Artist for 30 years.
What sparked your interest doing makeup?
My interest in doing makeup began when I learned how to do my own makeup. It always made me feel confident and beautiful and I wanted to make others feel the same way.
What inspired you to pursue being a Makeup Artist professionally?
I was inspired to pursue being a Makeup Artist full-time after I met an artist named Darac. He saw potential in me and took me under his wing, as my mentor. He introduced me to Film/Television School and I was able to learn a lot from him.
What is one of the proudest moments in your career?
One of the proudest moments in my career was creating the makeup look for Megyn Kelly at the 2016 Met Gala, themed “Manus X Machina.”
What do you love about being a makeup artist?
I love making my clients look and feel beautiful. I love to see the confidence it brings them.
How do you market yourself and get jobs?
Being a celebrity Makeup Artist and working in the Media Industry has made it easy for me to network and meet new people. But when first starting out it’s important to take every opportunity to do a client that comes your way. Even if it’s sometimes for free. These early relationships, if catered properly, end up leading to more clients and opportunities, as well as clients that will last a lifetime.
What’s one tip you’d give someone who’s just starting out as a Makeup Artist or in the beauty industry?
The best tip that I can give to someone who’s just starting out is to do it for the passion. Do it for the love of your work. Follow your heart and the money will come.
In your opinion, are the high-end, expensive brands really better or are the pharmacy brands just as good?
In my opinion, pharmacy brands can be just as good as high-end brands. You just have to be careful in selecting your products in both categories.
